When is Pagerank Worth it?

Posted on 3rd July 2008 by Bushie in Internet - Tags: , , ,

Go to any forum. Ask about attanting pagerank. Brace yourself for a slew of answers about how a Google Pagerank is ‘worthless’ and links to their own personal blog posts on the subject. Most of these people have lost Pagerank in the past, and are bitter about it. Perhaps they think that if they can convince enough people that Pageranks are worthless it will validate their own tiny rebellion against Google.

It’s childish and petty. Not one of them would freely give up their pagerank if they could, they are simply following the philosophy of “I don’t have it so I’ll claim I didn’t want it anyway”.

That’s not to say that a Pagerank is everything. It’s nice, and it’s not worthless. It’s nice to have if you do, for many reasons.

  1. Pagerank shows your site is here for the long run. It is an indication that it has been there for a few months, and that you’ve put effort in to linking it around the internet. You can’t fake a pagerank in a google toolbar.
  2. It shows that Google has noticed you.
  3. It’s a fast way for advertisers to assure themselves that your website is of reasonable quality.
  4. Some people and services value your links based on pagerank.

#4 has been a big issue in the pastm especially as Google stripped ranks from sites that appeared to be selling links. People are increasing looking to other ways to assess a website’s value, so whether you choose to place a large or small value on Pagerank is up to you.

Just grow up and don’t proclaim it to be worthless if you don’t have one.

  1. This is absolutely true , PR is important but its not the most important thing in a blog. I guess the biggest thing advertisers look for is traffic. But if you are into selling text links and paid reviews PR is important.

  3. After about a year at PR4 I went down to PR3 a couple of months ago. This makes me sad, especially because my Alexa rank went bad with their new algorithm, too. But I haven’t lost any advertisers, so I am trying not to worry about it.

  4. I want a better PageRank so that my posts are on the first position on Google results search (among other SEO techniques)

  5. For pro bloggers, PageRank is nothing just to worry about. They are merely concentrating on providing quality content to their readers. This what I heard from Jim Kukral in one of his interview with FathomSEO.com.

  7. Interesting post….So I have a question then:

If I participate in Pay Per Post, like I am doing, is that something that Google considers to be link selling? Or is selling links where people just put text links on their pages in exchange for cash?

I don’t do a lot of PayPer Post, but I hope I don’t lose my PageRank of 4 just because I’m trying to earn a little extra income to pay for gasoline, you know?

All, it’s Sunday and I’m catching up on comments for the week. This is in response to your comment on my post: Almost Wordless Wednesday: Pixar’s WALL-E.

Linda–WOW, thank you so much for the kind words, the superlative, and the validation.

Jennifer–I actually refer to Short Circuit in my review. Johnny 5 was hilarious. The difference between Johnny 5 and WALL-E though is that WALL-E can’t talk. Johnny 5 had clever dialog for his humor. WALL-E just has expression and gestures–which is far more difficult to do–especially to animate. Let me know what you think of WALL-E after you see it.

Sizzlingpopcorn–Thanks Jean! No doubt…You know, there’s always the possibility of Best Picture as well–Beauty and the Beast got a nomination…WALL-E is better.

the bushie–it’s dramatic, but very lighthearted. Make sure you stop back at MTMD and let me know what you thought about the movie after you see it.

Henson–You are so right! Have you seen WALL-E yet? I’m anxious to know what you think, especially considering our recent discussion on animated films.

tashabud–Yeah, well, when I love something, I glow. Kind of like ET’s Heartlight. ;) Let me know what you think after you see WALL-E!

Crazy Working Mom–You won’t be disappointed. Why don’t you go see it today? The night is young. Do it now.

    Cheers!
